Psalm 142
Back to Index page
A maskil[b] of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.

1 I cry aloud to the LORD;
    I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.
2 I pour out my complaint before him;
    before him I tell my trouble.
3 When my spirit grows faint within me,
    it is you who watch over my way.
    In the path where I walk
    men have hidden a snare for me.
4 Look to my right and see:
    no one is concerned for me.
    I have no refuge;
    no one cares for my life.

5 I cry to you, O LORD;
    I say, ‘You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living.’
6 Listen to my cry,
    for I am in desperate need;
    rescue me from those who pursue me,
    for they are too strong for me.
7 Set me free from my prison,
    that I may praise your name.
    Then the righteous will gather about me
    because of your goodness to me.

Psalm 142:- This is said to be the prayer David cried to the Lord, when he was on the run from Saul and was trapped in a cave.. David had been promised by God that he would be made king after Saul, now David in hiding, looks to God to help him out of the situation that he is in.
There are times in our lives when things go wrong, or people not talking to us, and we wonder why?
Why is this happening to me? What has gone wrong? And we pray, because things do not seem to be making sense of the situation, we are in. We can only join David in his prayer and pray what is happening to me? Or what can I learn from this.

I find that God surprises us with the tasks He wants us to do. I have been in hospital waiting for an operation, and the next day and someone has come into the ward frightened of what is going to happen to her, and all it took was for me to hold her hand while she went off to sleep. Her blood pressure went down, and she was able to have her operation. The startling thing is what she said next day, was that she felt she was holding Jesus’ hand as she was going to sleep.

We learn from David to put our trust in God. He will help us through our bad times and maybe give us a glimpse of where He wants us to go, or who we can help. We are God’s hand in this world helping people where we can.
