Psalm 27
Back to Index page

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation –
    whom shall I fear?
    The Lord is the stronghold of my life –
    of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evil men advance against me
    to devour[a] my flesh,
    When my enemies and my foes
    attack me, they will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
    though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.
4 One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this is what I seek:
    that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
    to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
    he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
    and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted
    above the enemies who surround me;
    at his tabernacle I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
    I will sing and make music to the Lord.

7 Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
8 My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have been my helper.
    Do not reject me or forsake me,
    God my Saviour.
10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord;
    lead me in a straight path
    because of my oppressors.
12 Do not hand me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    breathing out violence..
13 I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.

Psalm 27:- The Hebrew title for this psalm, says the psalm springs out of a deep hunger for God. David calling out directly to God, with expressions of confident trust include his prayer for deliverance. David returns to the trust previously stated as the only proper attitude on one who must now wait for God.
David had so many enemies who were trying to destroy him from every side. The worst was when some of his own family who turned against him and wanted to utterly destroy him. Perhaps we go through times when we feel our family or our work friends, are our enemies, trying to break us. Do we stumble and fall, or do we put our trust in God who will help us through these troubled times.
John 14:1-3 "Do not let not your hearts be troubled: trust in God, trust also in me." "In my Father’s house are many rooms: if it were not so, I would have told you. I am go to prepare a place for you." "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me."
David has made up his mind even before the battle starts, that he will be victorious.
"My heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek":
This psalm was written centuries ago, we may feel the same anguish as David did then that our world is falling into corruption and decay around us, perhaps this psalm is the cry we should be giving, as we hold on to the strength of God, and believe that God will put right the world out of the mess it has got itself into. This is an encouragement for all believers, to seek the Lord when trouble surrounds us, to seek out God in the midst of our troubles and confrontations.
