Psalm 47
Back to Index page
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
    shout to God with cries of joy.
2 How awesome is the Lord Most High,
    the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdued nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
4 He chose our inheritance for us,
    the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.[j]
5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;

7 For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing to him a psalm of praise.
8 God reigns over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
    for the kings of the earth belong to God;
    he is greatly exalted.
(NIV)

Psalm 47: One of the six psalms of the divine kingdom, the psalm celebrates the God’s kingship over all the earth (verse 9). The psalm is usually sung at the beginning of a new year, giving praise to God for the new year, and remembering the times God had helped them through their battles and won their land back for them.

The Jewish people also see it as an enthronement hymn, to God their King.

I like Charles H Spurgeon’s quote, ‘The church of God shall be the greatest of monarchies.
Let us shout for joy, praise God for all he has done.’

I wonder how may times do we shout or sing out our praise to God?
Do we thank Him for all He has done in our lives?
Do we thank Him for our families and friends?
Do we thank Him for giving us another day to be with friends and families?

We thank you Lord for giving us this day, for our families, our friends and the people we will meet today. Amen
