Psalm 92
Back to Index page
A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.

1 It is good to praise the LORD
    and make music to your name, O Most High,
2 to proclaiming your love in the morning
    and your faithfulness at night,
3 to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
    and the melody of the harp.
4 For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD;
    I sing for joy at the work of your hands.
5 How great are your works, O LORD,
    how profound your thoughts!
6 The senseless man does not know,
    fools do not understand,
7 that though the wicked spring up like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
    they will be for ever destroyed.
8 But you, O LORD, are exalted for ever.

9 For surely your enemies, O LORD,
    surely your enemies will perish;
    all evildoers will be scattered.
10 You have exalted my horn[b] like that of a wild ox;
    fine oils have been poured upon me.
11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;
    my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.
12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the LORD,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, ‘The LORD is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’
(NIV)

Psalm 92:. It is a psalm that express God’s command of the Kingdom.
• (1-5). An Expression of religion that proclaims a dualistic relation between God and the world, where God is a being who controls events from outside of the human world.
• (6-9). It is an observation concerning righteous sovereignty
• (10-15) A Testimony to God’s Goodness
Title: “For the Sabbath day”: In the post-Exilic community, some psalms were sung throughout the week in connection with the morning and evening sacrifice; others were designated especially for Sabbath worship.
"And there is no unrighteousness in him": Not in suffering the wicked to prosper (as in Psalm 92:7), and the righteous to be suffering, nor punishing bad men here, or hereafter. Nor in justifying sinners by the righteousness of his Son and giving them the crown of righteousness at the last day.
All the trials of God are in the most just and reasonable manner (see Romans 9:14). No one knows what aged people will reach., or the wonderful blessings through the years that we will have in our work for God. I think the chorus of the song, ‘Goodness of God’ by Jen Johnson says it all.

Chorus
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able I will sing of the goodness of God.
